The long awaited Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has finally been enacted which is great news for not only the renewable energy industry, but also self-builders and home improver’s. RHI payments make a considerable contribution to the installation and running costs of a renewable energy system and it is easy to determine the payback time frame of your investment. There are 2 elements to RHI payments – an upfront capital payment which is a set amount based on your technology and an ongoing payment for 7 years, the amount of which is based on your property and heat requirements.
Both new builds and retrofit projects are eligible for the RHI scheme. Eligible renewable energy systems include air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, biomass and Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) comes in under the Renewable Obligation Certificate scheme (ROCs / NIROC).
Heat pumps in the UK and Ireland have not quite come of age as they are in Northern Europe, but they have been around long enough to warrant upgrades! At Daly we have installed a few new heat pump systems in the last few months for clients wishing to upgrade to the more advanced and efficient products now on the market. It makes sense for them to do so as the older systems do not have the prerequisite MCS Accreditation to qualify for the RHI scheme. The COP for the most modern and innovative systems, such as the Ecoforest Ground Source Heat Pump, when taken into account with the RHI payments, means that their payback period is as low as 3-4 years. It is a win-win situation for these clients on all fronts.
If you are about to embark on a self build or home improvement project, give us a call to discuss the best renewable heat options for you. With the RHI payments now in force, it really does pay to go green.
